The global Top 10 of the most-watched movies on Netflix has a new addition: an Argentine thriller titled “Rest In Peace.” According to FlixPatrol, the movie is Top 8 worldwide. Goya-winner director Sebastian Borensztein, known for films such as “Un Cuento Chino” and “La Odisea de los Giles,” helms the project, which has received positive reviews.

The movie landed on Netflix on March 21, and it has quickly become one of the trending films on the platform. In Argentina, “Rest In Peace” is the most-watched film. The movie tells the story of a man trapped by debt who pretends to be dead to protect his family.

“Rest in Peace” is based on the book of the same name by Martin Baintrub, which was published in 2018. It stars Joaquín Furriel, Griselda Siciliani, Gabriel Goity, Lali González, and Luciano Borges.

What is ‘Rest in Peace’ about?

This dark thriller pushes viewers to ponder what they would do in such an extreme situation, teetering between life and death. Produced by Ricardo Darín, the film draws from the AMIA bombing and the socio-economic context of 1994.

The film follows Sergio, a small business owner struggling during the era of import liberalization under Menem’s presidency. Faced with mounting debts, the protagonist finds himself at the site of the AMIA attack on July 18, 1994. Surviving the explosion, he deceives the world into believing he died, vanishing to shield his family from poverty.

However, he then finds himself missing his family. What would he do? The ending of the film has been quite controversial, with some critics finding it clichéd. However, all the critics agree that Furriel’s performance is exceptional.

While the film is set in Argentina, author Baintrub said that he drew inspiration for the story after 9/11. “Then I brought it to Argentina, setting it in the context of the AMIA attack and the financial crisis of Menem’s government. It was a good idea,” he told Radio Nacional.
