The enduring mythos of Jack Skellington and the eternally confused holiday towns has always pulsed with an untapped magic, leaving audiences wondering what twisted genius might next emerge from the iconic spiral hill.

For over three decades, The Nightmare Before Christmas has stood as a singular piece of seasonal artistry, a boundary between Halloween dread and Christmas wonder that many felt should never be crossed again by mere sequels.

Yet, the gravity of its cult status, combined with the wealth of stories left in the Hinterlands, has made a return to this stop-motion universe inevitable, regardless of the original creators’ reluctance.

That moment of return is now upon the landscape of popular culture, confirming that the citizens of Halloween Town are ready to step out of the shadows once more…

Sally Takes the Spotlight: The Sequel Comic Details

The decades-long question of a true continuation for The Nightmare Before Christmas has finally received a substantial answer. While a feature film remains elusive, the world of Jack Skellington and Halloween Town is officially expanding in comic book form.

The wait for a return to Tim Burton’s classic is over, as a brand new sequel to the original film has been announced by Dynamite, sending Sally back to Christmas Town with a whole new breed of nightmare.

The official announcement was made directly from NYCC, unveiling the title as Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Shiver of Christmas Town. This new miniseries from Dynamite Comics will focus heavily on Sally, positioning her in a central new adventure.

The plot synopsis teases the introduction of the titular “Shiver”, a new character that drives the story: The enigmatic Dr. Finkelstein, Sally’s creator, has another creation in the works. When he debuts an unusual, yet unexpectedly adorable creature as a new pet, Sally is tasked with taking care of it. Only for the three resident trick-or-treaters of Halloween Town to have it in tow as they embark on their journey to Christmas Town.

The 4-issue miniseries is scheduled to begin this January, recruiting a team of talented creators, including writer Torunn Gronbekk, artist Edu Menna, Adriano Augusto and Taylor Esposito. The follow-up story, described as an “unforgettable trick-or-treating tale, perfect for all ages“, is clearly designed to place Sally in the starring role.

Adding to the excitement, Gronbekk assures fans that the spirit of the original movie remains intact, celebrating the blend of dark whimsy: “Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a feast of imagination and dark delights, and it has been a joy to play in and contribute to this world. In our story, little goes to plan: tricks are played, treats are had, and along the way, Dr. Finkelstein’s new creation Shiver discovers the true magic of Halloween… I hope the book will introduce a new generation of readers to the enchanting world of Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas“.

While the focus is clearly on Sally, Lock, Shock and Barrel, Jack Skellington is “noticably absent from this first look. However, since the adventure heads to Christmas Town on Halloween night, the possibility of the Pumpkin King making a cameo appearance remains open before the story concludes.
