According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have been set to direct a feature adaptation of “Metal Gear Solid” as part of a newly secured first-look deal with Sony Pictures.
The project marks a significant step forward for a property that has lingered in development for years, now paired with filmmakers whose recent momentum has made them a priority for the studio.
A Breakout Moment Leads to a High-Profile Assignment
Lipovsky and Stein’s ascent has been swift. After building their reputation in genre filmmaking, the pair broke through commercially with “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” a revival entry that not only reinvigorated its franchise but also delivered strong box office returns and critical reception.
Sony’s agreement with the duo extends beyond a single picture. Through their banner Wonderlab, they’re expected to develop and produce a range of projects across the studio’s labels, with a focus on character-driven, genre-blending stories aimed at broad audiences, including an animated “Venom” movie.
The adaptation will be produced by Avi Arad and Ari Arad, continuing their track record of translating video game properties to the screen with projects such as “Ghost in the Shell” and “Uncharted.”
Originally released in 1998 and created by Hideo Kojima, “Metal Gear Solid” helped define cinematic storytelling in games, blending stealth mechanics with political intrigue and science fiction. Its influence on both game design and narrative structure has made it one of the medium’s most respected titles.
