‘Wonka’ streaming: Is Timothée Chalamet’s film available to watch on Max?

Timothée Chalamet’s take on Willy Wonka arrived in cinemas back in December and, despite initial hesitation toward another version of the character, the film has been well-received by audiences and critics. Either way, some people still might prefer watching it from home.

Wonka, from Warner Bros, will have its grand streaming debut on March 8th and will be added to the Max catalog. The movie continues to be one of the big hits of the year, and it is estimated that once it premieres on the platform, it will manage to enter the Top 10 in the United States and worldwide.

Also, Amazon Prime Video already has the film available for preorder. It will be accessible for premium video on-demand streaming on January 30 on the platform, as well as on Apple, Google and more. So far, the film has remained as the number 1 at the domestic box office grossing $164.7 million so far, and $301.2 million globally.

Wonka was an unlikely hit for Warner Bros.

Directed by Paul King, to turn a profit for Warner Bros., Wonka had to surpass $240 million in box office revenue, considering a production budget of $120 million and an estimated marketing expenditure exceeding $100 million. In total, the film has already grossed $465.8 million.

The film follows Chalamet’s titular character as he decides to open a candy store but his endeavors are interrupted by other chocolatiers who have a monopoly over the industry. The cast includes Sally Hawkins, Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, and Keegan-Michael Key round out the ensemble as well.

Talking to GamesRadar+, Chalamet said that part of the reason he wanted to do it was because he “[loves] musical theater and I love song and dance,” and that he “didn’t think I’d get a chance to do it, not like this. But Paul King is one of these directors that you don’t say no to.”

He also thought that the film was “very clever,” as “[It’s] about this young Willy, who was definitely not the crazy, cynical, kind of jaded, brain-fried version that we see in the two prior films but was very hopeful, young, ambitious, won’t-take-no-for-an-answer, maybe a little naive.”
