The Cannes Film Festival often delivers major premieres and star packed reunions, but one of its most affecting moments this year came from a franchise looking back at its own history.
According to Page Six, Vin Diesel became emotional during a special screening of the original “Fast and Furious” picture marking the series’ 25th anniversary, using the occasion to reflect on his enduring connection with late co star Paul Walker.
A Reunion That Became a Tribute
What began as a celebration of the title that launched one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises gradually shifted into something more intimate inside the Grand Lumiere Theatre. Standing alongside longtime co stars Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, with Paul Walker’s daughter Meadow also present, Diesel addressed the audience while revisiting memories attached to the film that started it all.
For Diesel, revisiting the first movie carries a different emotional weight after Walker’s death in 2013. Through tears, he shared one of the evening’s most personal remarks, saying, “I pray that in your life you have a brother like Paul.” Rather than speaking about a co worker or screen partner, Diesel returned to the language he has used for years when discussing Walker, referring to him as “Pablo,” a nickname closely tied to their friendship.
The actor also described how the original picture now plays differently for him than it does for audiences. “There’s so many moments in this movie that you see, that I see differently,” he told the crowd before recalling one memory in particular. “The scene that you see, I see the moment Pablo told me he had a 1-year-old daughter.”
That daugther became part of the emotional center of the evening. Diesel embraced his goddaughter on stage and spoke about her presence at Cannes, saying, “This is a film where brotherhood was introduced to our millennium, by myself and my brother Pablo. The person that was not going to let me come alone here to represent that brotherhood was Meadow Walker.”
The relationship between Walker and Diesel has long stretched beyond “Fast and Furious.” Over the years Diesel has continued honoring his friend in public and private ways, maintaining a close bond with Meadow and keeping Walker’s memory woven into his own family life. Before wrapping up his remarks in Cannes, Diesel shared a comment Meadow made earlier in the day that stayed with him. “She said, ‘I’m 27, and I’m watching this film that my father made at 27,’ and I thought, ‘How profound.'”
