The announcement adds another layer of continuity to a project that already reunites Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
The Sequel Reunites Two of the Original Film’s Most Memorable Characters
Kevin J. O’Connor is set to reprise his role as Beni Gabor, Rick O’Connell’s former French Foreign Legion companion whose opportunistic nature led him to side with the resurrected Imhotep in the 1999 picture. Oded Fehr will once again portray Ardeth Bay, the leader of the Medjai, the secret order dedicated to preventing the ancient priest’s return. Both characters became fan favorites through their very different relationships with Brendan Fraser’s adventurer.
Released in 1999, “The Mummy” followed Rick O’Connell, librarian and aspiring Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan, and her brother Jonathan as an expedition to the lost city of Hamunaptra accidentally awakened the cursed high priest Imhotep. The action-adventure hit earned more than $422 million worldwide and launched a long-running franchise that included sequels, spin-offs and a 2017 reboot attempt.
The new installment continues to build around the core cast from the original series. Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell alongside Rachel Weisz as Evelyn, while John Hannah is also back as Jonathan Carnahan. New additions include Numan Acar and Michael Johnston, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence directing from a screenplay by David Coggeshall.
While story details remain under wraps, the sequel is expected to continue the narrative established by “The Mummy Returns,” with reports indicating it will move past the events of “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” Production is expected to make use of practical locations in London and Morocco. Universal has scheduled the film for release on October 15, 2027, positioning it for the Halloween movie season.
