Jenna Ortega’s ascent has been anything but accidental, but even she admits there was a point when it almost came to an abrupt halt.
During a recent conversation on Kid Cudi’s Big Bro podcast, the Emmy-nominated actress shared that she seriously considered stepping away from the industry altogether before a pivotal opportunity reshaped her perspective.
A Crossroads After Early Success
For Jenna Ortega, the years following her Disney Channel run were marked less by momentum and more by uncertainty. After finishing “Stuck in the Middle,” she found herself in unfamiliar territory, navigating an industry that suddenly felt less certain than it once had.
Speaking on the podcast, she recalled the disorientation of that transition. “I didn’t know what else I was gonna do,” she said, describing a period where acting had been her only real focus, yet no longer felt like a guaranteed path forward.
The challenge wasn’t just about landing the next role. It was about redefining herself. Filmmakers didn’t necessarily recognize her beyond her Disney work, and the process of reintroducing herself to the industry began to feel daunting. The reality was blunt: “I had to prove myself and meet all these new casting directors who didn’t know who I was.”
At the same time, life outside of Hollywood was beginning to call. Starting high school brought a shift in priorities, and the idea of stepping away started to feel less like failure and more like a natural turning point. “It just felt like a good time to call it quits if I was going to,” she admitted, noting that the possibility had been discussed seriously with her team.
That trajectory changed when she landed the role of Ellie Alves on “You.” What could have been just another job instead became a turning point. Walking onto that space reignited something that had been fading. “I went on that set and I loved it and had the best time,” she said, before arriving at a realization that would define the next phase of her career: “Yeah, there’s no way I could let this go.”
