According to The Hollywood Reporter, Proximity Media Television, founded by Coogler alongside his wife Zinzi Coogler and producing partner Sev Ohanian, has signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix to develop series exclusively for the streamer.
The move comes after the company’s previous overall television arrangement with Disney concluded earlier this year, following a period in which Coogler enjoyed major acclaim thanks to “Sinners,” the horror phenomenon that earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Proximity Media Expands Its Television Ambitions With Netflix
The new partnership gives Netflix exclusive access to future series developed by Proximity Media Television. In a joint statement, Ryan and Zinzi Coogler and Ohanian said the company was founded with the intention of creating event driven stories centered on subjects that often receive little attention. They added that Netflix’s support of distinctive voices made it a natural fit as Proximity broadens its presence in television.
Netflix executive Jinny Howe praised the company’s track record, saying Proximity has built a reputation for elevating visionary creators and producing stories that connect with audiences worldwide. She also highlighted the work of Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Ohanian in establishing an award-winning television division and said the streaming giant is eager to collaborate with the team on its next slate of projects.
The deal arrives at a high point in Coogler’s career. His 2025 film “Sinners,” which he wrote, produced, and directed, became one of the year’s biggest successes. Starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, the supernatural thriller grossed $370 million worldwide and received widespread acclaim. At the 98th Academy Awards, the film collected a record breaking 16 nominations and won four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler.
Proximity Media Television has already assembled an active lineup. The company produced Marvel’s “Ironheart” and the animated series “Eyes of Wakanda” for Disney+, along with National Geographic’s “Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time.”
Vice president of television Simone Harris is currently overseeing pilots for a new “The X-Files” series starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, as well as a live action adaptation of “Southern B**tards” featuring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman, and Tim McGraw.
For Coogler, whose filmmaking career began with “Fruitvale Station” before expanding into “Creed” and Marvel’s “Black Panther” films, the agreement marks another significant step in building Proximity Media into a broader entertainment company.
