Chadwick tenía 42 años y perdió la vida el 28 de agosto de 2020 tras haber luchado contra el cáncer desde 2016. Para muchos fue una sorpresa porque no hablaba de su enfermedad públicamente. El estadounidense falleció en su casa de Los Ángeles acompañado de su esposa y familia. Inmediatamente la industria entera se volcó a despedirlo y su legado está más vivo que nunca.
El intérprete es un intenso protagonista de la temporada de Premios 2021 y hasta esta noche había ganado ocho galardones, incluyendo Critics' Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards y Screen Actors Guild Awards. Su destacada actuación como Levee en Ma Raineys Black Bottom lo posicionó como el gran favorito para el Oscar post-morten.
Si el recordado protagonista de Black Panther se lleva el Óscar, será el tercer actor en conseguir un premio póstumo. En 1977, gracias a la película Network fue Peter Finch quien salió vencedor y, en 2009 Heath Ledger por The Dark Night.
