If you’re looking for a new rom-com to watch, you can try ‘French Girl’, starring Zach Braff, Vanessa Hudgens and Evelyne Brochu. The movie recently became the sixth most watched on Prime Video in the US, according to FlixPatrol.

Co-written and directed by James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, known for their work in ‘Independence Day: Resurgence,’ the romantic comedy follows Gordon, played by Braff, as he accompanies his chef girlfriend Sophie (Brochu) to her hometown and meets her ex Ruby (Hudgens) and her family.

While he tries his best to gain the approval of Sophie’s family, he also has to compete for her affections with Ruby, who isn’t ready to leave the past behind. The comedy premiered and went under the radar back in March, but it seems like the film is having a second life on streaming.

‘French Girl,’ a familiar rom-com with some surprises

As fans of romantic comedies know, it’s not easy to follow the conventions of the genre (which are beloved for a reason) while trying to put a unique spin to them. And ‘French Girl’ does its best to do so, not always with good results.

The film has received mixed reviews from critics, mostly praising leads Brochu and Hudgens, who is one of the standouts of the film, as well as the dynamics of Sophie’s family. However, the script wasn’t as solid as it could have been.

Another highlight of the film are the settings, as it takes place in Quebec, and there are many landmarks of the city featured in the story. They also serve the function of “winning over” Braff’s character.

Apart from the main trio, the rest of the cast includes Luc Picard as Sophie’s dad, Isabelle Vincent as her mom, Charlotte Aubin and Antoine Olivier Pilon as her siblings. Meanwhile, Muriel Dutil plays Sophie’s grandmother.
