Hospital dramas continue to be a popular trend, and now Spain has introduced its own take on the genre with “Breathless.” This is one of the first shows of its kind produced in the country, and it has quickly gained a massive viewership just hours after its release on Netflix.
The series consists of eight episodes, each lasting fifty minutes, all of which are now available for streaming. Set in the Joaquín Sorolla public hospital, the story unfolds in a critical environment where the staff faces the harsh realities of public healthcare—dealing with long shifts, low wages, and a lack of necessary resources to properly treat patients.
As expected with this genre, most viewers binge-watched the entire first season in less than a day and are already eager to know if a second season is on the way. Here’s what the director has to say. But be warned! We’ll be discussing the title’s finale, so if you haven’t watched it yet, it’s best to do so before reading further!
Will there be a second season of ‘Breathless’ on Netflix?
If you’ve already watched the final episode of “Breathless,” you know that a second season is on the horizon. Oscar is barely alive but has admitted he needs help for his addiction, Patricia has decided to undergo special chemo and privatize the hospital, and the biggest cliffhanger of all—Jessica’s love triangle with Biel and Lluís—ends with her on the verge of death after being attacked by an unstable patient.
Looking at Prime Video canceling “My Lady Jane” and Netflix pulling the plug on “Dead Boy Detectives,” it comes clear that nothing is ever certain when it comes to streaming platforms. But the newly released hospital drama seems to have a strong chance of continuing, and here’s why.
First and foremost, the title is helmed by Carlos Montero, who has earned Netflix’s trust with his success on “Élite,” one of its most popular Spanish-language series, which ran for eight seasons. Given the open-ended conclusion of “Breathless” and the high viewership it’s already enjoying, it’s likely that Netflix will continue to back Montero in developing future installments.
Moreover, Montero has stated in multiple interviews, including one with Ecartelera, that his creation draws significant inspiration from “Grey’s Anatomy” and, as we know, the iconic title wouldn’t have achieved its enduring success without a long run.
In other words, hospital dramas are often built for multiple seasons, and “Breathless” is no exception, especially with its open-ended finale that leaves many questions unanswered and even more raised. As for the release date, 2025 seems a likely possibility. Montero was given the creative freedom to release new seasons of “Elite” annually since its debut in 2018, so it’s probable that he’ll enjoy the same level of autonomy with his latest production.
