Titled The Social Network Part II, this follow-up promises to delve into the more recent controversies surrounding Facebook (now Meta) and its vast societal impact.

Confirmed in June 2025, the sequel sees the return of Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who will not only pen the script but also step into the director’s chair, a significant change from the original, which was helmed by David Fincher. Sorkin has long hinted at the potential for a sequel, particularly after events like January 6, 2021, which he believes Facebook played a role in facilitating.

New Narrative

Unlike the original film, which focused on the tumultuous origins of Facebook’s creation, The Social Network Part II will reportedly shift its focus to the “The Facebook Files,” a series of explosive articles published by The Wall Street Journal in 2021. These articles exposed internal documents detailing the company’s awareness of and complicity in disseminating harmful content, its influence on political events, and the negative effects on teenage users.

Different Cast

This new narrative direction also brings a fresh wave of casting speculation. While Jesse Eisenberg’s iconic portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg earned him an Oscar nomination, reports indicate that he has passed on reprising the role. Instead, sources close to the production suggest that Jeremy Strong, renowned for his Emmy-winning performance in Succession, is the top choice to play a more mature and embattled Mark Zuckerberg.

Additionally, two other award-winning talents are reportedly being eyed for key roles: Jeremy Allen White of The Bear fame and recent Oscar winner Mikey Madison from Anora.

While production timelines and a release date are yet to be announced, The Social Network Part II is reportedly a “top priority” for Sony Pictures. The anticipation is palpable for this follow-up, as it promises to offer a timely and incisive examination of one of the most influential and controversial companies of our time
