Amy Winehouse will always be remembered as one of the most iconic rhythm and blues singers of all time, with a very distinctive style and a voice that has shattered all standards set by the music industry. The legend is an icon, and soon she will have her own biopic, titled Back to Black.

Many know her for having an impressive vocal range, described as “acoustically powerful” and capable of “expressing her emotions deeply”. While others only know some of her most significant hits, such as Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, “Love Is a Losing Game, Tears Dry On Their Own and Back to Black.

The biographical film dedicated to her memory will not only be full of drama and tell her story deeply but also share her journey in music, from her beginnings to her tragic end. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the project, based on a script developed by Matt Greenhalgh.

Who portrays Amy Winehouse in the biopic?

Back to Black is the upcoming biopic that everyone is eagerly anticipating, but especially the fans of the iconic and talented Amy Winehouse. Set apart from being a documentary, the film will showcase the best and worst moments of the legend, who will be portrayed by Marisa Abela (known for roles in Cobra, Industry and Rogue Agent).

The official synopsis of the film ensures that the scenes will depict the life and music of Winehouse, who began as a jazz singer and eventually became a Grammy-winning music superstar. Despite all the success, her life was cut short in 2011 when she was only 27 years old, succumbing to the effects of alcohol and drug consumption.

Certainly, the 27-year-old British actress will not be alone, as many significant names in the industry will be credited as part of the cast. Jack O’Connell will be portraying Blake Fielder-Civil, the former husband of the singer, who was long blamed for influencing Amy into substance abuse.

Who is Marisa Abela?

Marisa Gabrielle Abela, known by her first and middle name, was born in December 1996 and felt the call to the arts at a very early age. She made her big debut in the entertainment industry at the age of 11, landing the role of Alicia in the 2008 thriller Man in a Box. Since then, she has not stopped working and has expanded her filmography.

She is currently known for playing significant roles in the series Industry (which aired its first season in 2020) and COBRA. In July 2022, she joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s popular film, Barbie. There, the young star portrayed Teen Talk Barbie, sharing the screen with prominent figures.
