True crime series have become one of the most popular genres among viewers. Thanks to streaming platforms, such as Netflix, there are new shows that explore real cases, and attempt to explain and show the consequences of such tragedies. One of them is ‘The Act’, which you can find on Hulu.
The series tells the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who has been recently released from prison after having served 85% of her sentence for her involvement in the 2015 murder of her abusive mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee,” alongside her then-boyfriend Nick Godejohn.
The 32-year-old’s case is widely recognized in American history as a notable instance of suspected Munchausen by Proxy. This psychological condition prompts caregivers to engage in attention-seeking behavior, often causing harm to those under their care or falsely portraying them as ill.
The Act received critical acclaimed during its release
While ‘The Act’ was released back in 2019, the series has gained traction again after Gypsy Rose was liberated from prison this Thursday (Dec. 28th, 2023). She is set to tell her story in the Lifetime documentary series titled “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard,” which will air on Lifetime from Jan. 5, 2024, to Jan. 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. EST/PST. However, her case was also explained in the HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest.”
Meanwhile, “The Act” is the dramatization of her life and the tragic murder of her mother. Joey King portrayed Gypsy Rose, while Patricia Arquette played the mother. Both of them received critical acclaim.
