Sofia Carson: Netflix’s romance star returns this summer with My Oxford Year

Sofia Carson, Netflix’s go-to star for heartwarming romance films, is set to dazzle audiences once again this summer with the premiere of My Oxford Year.

Sofia Carson, who broke through Hollywood by portraying Evie in the Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants in 2015, has since transitioned into a versatile and accomplished actress. Leaving behind her Disney image, she has become one of Netflix’s most recognized faces, captivating audiences of all ages.

Rise in Romance Films

Romantic films have become a significant part of Sofia Carson’s career. In 2022, she starred in the Netflix romantic drama Purple Hearts. Following that success, she continued her collaboration with Netflix, starring in the romantic comedy The Life List, which premiered in March 2025. In this film, Carson portrays Alex Rose, a young woman who embarks on a journey to fulfill her late mother’s childhood bucket list, leading to self-discovery and unexpected love. Carson revealed that some fans reached out to share that the film inspired them to make significant changes in their lives, including ending unfulfilling relationships.

Coming Up

Carson is set to star in My Oxford Year, an adaptation of Julia Whelan’s novel, scheduled for release on Netflix on August 1, 2025. In this romantic comedy, she plays Anna, an ambitious American student who moves to Oxford University to fulfill her childhood dream, only to find her path altered by a budding romance with a witty and mysterious local, played by Corey Mylchreest.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Communication from Universidad de Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales (UCES) in Buenos Aires and has a solid background in media and public affairs. In 2020, she won first place in journalistic feature writing at the EXPOCOM-FADECCOS competition, which brings together student work from universities across Argentina. She also completed a year-and-a-half internship in the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Argentina, where she worked closely with journalists and media operations. Carolina specializes in entertainment writing, with a focus on celebrity news, as well as romantic and drama films.
