While primarily known for his role as Steve Harrington in the science fiction series Stranger Things (2016–present), Joe Keery is preparing himself to jump into new ventures. Especially after he scored his first Billboard entry with “Chicago” thanks to its popularity on TikTok, and his supporting role in the series “Fargo.”

In “Fargo,” Keery, 31, plays Gator Tillman, a young sheriff with major daddy issues, and a much darker character that we used to watch him play. However, the actor received critical acclaim for his performance, and he could land an Emmy nomination for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a TV Movie.

If he lands the recognition or not, Keery still has one more chapter with Steve, as the final season of the Netflix hit has finally entered production (after delays due to the Hollywood strikes). The actor opened up to Variety on what it feels like to leave such an important part of his career behind.

Keery says that ‘every story that has to end’ when asked about Stranger Things

Growing up with a character and then having to say goodbye is not easy, but Keery is certainly ready to take the step when talking about Stranger Things. “It’s been a core part of everyone’s lives, and had such a profound impact on my life, and what basically made my career. I owe so much to everybody there, he explained to Variety.

It’ll be weird to say goodbye, obviously. But there’s a part of every story that has to end and it feels like we’re getting towards it,”he says, adding that he thinks that “everybody probably feels that way.” However, he says that filming the fifth season of the hit Netflix series doesn’t feel like the end.

“It just feels like back to business, back to work,” he says, explaining that after so many years, the cast has their own way to work through the shooting. “On ‘Stranger Things,’ there’s this unspoken zippiness in a way that the dialogue flows together and the way we all understand it will be edited. There’s this collective understanding of the product that we’re making,” he concluded.

What is next for the actor?

After the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, Joe Keery, whose other credits include “Marmalade” (2024) and “Free Guy” (2021), will appear in the upcoming thriller “Cold Storage,” in which he stars alongside Liam Neeson.
