The Summer I Turned Pretty turned Conrad, Belly and Cousins Beach into landmarks of modern teen drama, built on summers that change everything and silences that say too much. Now, that bittersweet universe is preparing to stretch beyond episodic storytelling and into a new cinematic chapter.

While the series built its reputation on longing glances, broken friendships and slow-burning first loves, the shift to a movie marks a turning point for the franchise. Questions now surround timing, production and what this cinematic leap could mean for a story that grew up alongside its audience.

Jenny Han Spoke About the Movie’s Release on Amazon

Jenny Han revealed that she has officially finished writing the script for The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie, several months after the project was first announced. However, she confirmed that production has not yet begun. “I just wrote it”, she said during The Wrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit. “We have not filmed anything yet”.

She also shut down early theories that placed the movie’s premiere during the holiday season. “I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas”, she explained, “but unfortunately, not happening, not possible”.

Han pointed to the tight post-production timeline of season three as a key reason. “The show came out in July”, she said. “So it was really up to the last minute on the show, so that we wouldn’t have had time to film the whole movie”. With no filming completed, a near-term release is now off the table.

What Has Been Revealed About the Story So Far?

While details about the plot remain under wraps, Jenny Han has hinted that the movie will focus on a major turning point in Belly’s life. During a previous appearance on Today, she teased that an important milestone is ahead for the character. “There is another big milestone for Belly. So we’ll continue along with that journey”, she said.

Interestingly, even the main cast remains largely in the dark. Lola Tung and Christopher Briney admitted they have not yet seen the script or learned specific story details. “I’m sure Jenny has a great—she apparently has a first draft”, Tung said earlier. “So hopefully, maybe soon we’ll find out”.

Briney echoed the sentiment with humor, adding, “Thank god I’m not in the writer’s room, because I would write in some dumb s–t”. For now, the movie remains in its early creative stage—script completed, production pending and fans waiting for the next update on when Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah will return to screens.
