After a difficult departure from a major dating app (Tinder), Wolfe embarks on a mission to create a new platform rooted in the core principle of female empowerment. The app, Bumble, made her one of the world’s youngest self-made female billionaires.

While both apps are based on the “swipe right to like, swipe left to pass” model, Bumble’s defining feature is that it puts women in control of the initial conversation. This was a direct response to a negative environment, where women on platforms like Tinder were receiving a high volume of unsolicited explicit pictures. This experience caused Whitney Wolfe Herd to clash with her male colleagues at Tinder, ultimately leading to her departure and the creation of a new, safer platform.

In heterose*ual matches on Bumble, once a match is made, only the woman can send the first message. This rule was a foundational principle of Wolfe Herd, who designed the app this way to create a safer, more respectful environment and reduce unwanted messages.
