The upcoming expansion of the Lord of the Rings universe has entered a new phase with confirmation that Aragorn will be recast for The Hunt for Gollum. Reports indicate that Viggo Mortensen will not return to the role he defined in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, as the story is set in an earlier timeline requiring a younger version of the character.
The decision marks one of the most significant casting shifts in the franchise’s modern revival. Directed by Andy Serkis and positioned between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the film follows a period in which Aragorn is actively involved in tracking Gollum under Gandalf’s guidance.
Aragorn Recast Confirmed: Jamie Dornan Takes Over the Role
Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Aragorn will be recast in the upcoming Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. The role, originally made iconic by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, will now be played by Jamie Dornan.
The decision is tied to the film’s timeline, which is set in an earlier period of Middle-earth, depicting Aragorn in his “Strider” years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Dornan’s casting was revealed during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation in 2026, alongside the announcement of a broader returning ensemble that includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
According to reports, the film will explore Aragorn’s pursuit of Gollum alongside Gandalf, functioning as a narrative bridge between The Hobbit and the original trilogy. Production is scheduled for release in December 2027, marking one of the most significant expansions of the Tolkien cinematic universe in years.
