Robert De Niro Turns 83: He Spent Four Months Learning Sicilian for ‘The Godfather Part II’

When Robert De Niro was cast as a young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 masterpiece, The Godfather Part II, he faced an almost impossible task.

He wasn’t just playing a mafia patriarch; he was taking over a character that Marlon Brando had turned into an instant pop-culture legend just two years prior.

Rather than offering an impression of Brando, De Niro approached the role with a level of linguistic and cultural discipline that set a new standard for film acting.

Four Months in Sicily: True Linguistic Immersion

Set in the early 1900s, the prequel storylines in The Godfather Part II follow young Vito’s journey from his native town of Corleone, Sicily, to the tenement streets of Little Italy, New York.

Coppola insisted that Vito’s scenes speak to the authentic immigrant experience, which meant the character needed to speak fluent Sicilian dialect.

De Niro moved to Sicily for four months prior to filming. He lived among locals in the countryside, recording residents’ conversations and working daily with language coaches. Crucially, De Niro refused to simply memorize his lines phonetically. He studied the cadence, grammar, and regional inflections of the Corleonese dialect, learning how native speakers used subtle hand gestures and vocal pitch to convey meaning.

As a result, nearly 80% of De Niro’s dialogue in The Godfather Part II is spoken entirely in Sicilian with English subtitles—a bold decision for a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster at the time.

The Historic Oscar Double-Header

De Niro’s quiet, commanding, and authentic performance was a triumph. He captured the subtle rasp and stillness that Brando had established in the 1972 original while infusing the character with the youthful drive of a man building an empire from scratch.

At the 47th Academy Awards, De Niro won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Because Marlon Brando had previously won Best Actor for playing older Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972), their wins made cinema history: Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro became the first two actors in history to win Academy Awards for portraying the exact same fictional character.

That ultra-exclusive feat has only been repeated twice since: by Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix (both winning Oscars for playing the Joker) and by Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose (both winning Oscars for playing Anita in West Side Story).

As Robert De Niro celebrates his 83rd birthday today, his immersive work on The Godfather Part II remains a shining testament to the power of linguistic mastery and artistic dedication.
