Spanning six feature films—including Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon—their work has defined a generation of cinema.

Yet, few fans realize that this powerhouse duo only exists because of a personal recommendation from Robert De Niro.

The Spark: ‘This Boy’s Life’ (1993)

In 1992, a 17-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio landed the co-starring role opposite Robert De Niro in the biographical drama This Boy’s Life (released in 1993). Playing an abused teenager pitted against his tyrannical stepfather (De Niro), DiCaprio was tasked with going toe-to-toe with one of the most intimidating actors in Hollywood history.

During auditions and filming, DiCaprio refused to be intimidated. In one famous story from the set, during a heated scene rehearsal, DiCaprio unscripted slapped a bowl of mustard out of De Niro’s hand and screamed back in his face. Instead of getting angry, De Niro was blown away by the teenager’s fearlessness, focus, and raw emotional instincts.

The Phone Call That Changed Cinema History

Shorty after wrapping This Boy’s Life, De Niro reconnected with his longtime friend and collaborator, Martin Scorsese.

De Niro rarely gave unsolicited casting advice, which made what he told Scorsese all the more impactful. As Scorsese later recalled in interviews:

“Bob called me up and said, ‘By the way, I’m working with this young kid, Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s really good. You should work with him sometime.'”

Scorsese took De Niro’s recommendation to heart. A few years later, when casting for his 19th-century epic Gangs of New York, Scorsese remembered De Niro’s high praise and cast the young actor as Amsterdam Vallon.

Three Generations of Talent

The recommendation didn’t just spark a single movie; it initiated a 20-plus-year artistic partnership that earned dozens of Academy Award nominations and billions at the global box office.

The story came full circle in 2023 with Scorsese’s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon. For the first time in a feature film, Scorsese directed both of his muses together—bringing Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio onto the same set to share the screen under his direction. It served as a crowning moment for three generations of cinematic genius, all set in motion by a single phone call in 1993.
