While Joe’s intense discipline propelled Michael to historic heights with Motown and the Jackson 5, it came at a heavy psychological cost.
In his landmark 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Michael broke down in tears as he described his childhood under Joe’s reign. He recounted how his father would sit in a chair with a belt in his hand during rehearsals, striking any child who missed a step or a note.
“My father was a genius as a manager,” Michael admitted to Oprah. “But if you didn’t do it the right way, he would tear you up… I was so fast, he couldn’t catch me half the time. But when he did catch me, it was bad… I was terrified of him.”
