Paramount Pictures is officially in early development on a sequel to the 2003 romantic comedy classic How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce the project.
Kate Hudson On Board as Studio Eyes Original Duo
Hudson will produce the sequel alongside veteran producer Stacey Sher (Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich, Django Unchained, Vanilla Sky) through her Shiny Penny banner. While development remains in its early stages, the clear goal for Paramount and the creative team is to have both Hudson and co-star Matthew McConaughey reprise their beloved roles as magazine columnist Andie Anderson and advertising executive Benjamin Barry.
The project is actively seeking a screenwriter to pitch a fresh story, meaning official casting deals will hinge on the direction of the script. Reps for both stars did not immediately comment on the report.
Riding the Massive Y2K Nostalgia Wave
A follow-up to the iconic rom-com aligns seamlessly with Hollywood’s current box office playbook. The announcement arrives amid a massive wave of early-2000s throwbacks dominating theaters. Hits like The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scary Movie 6, and Toy Story 5 have already delivered massive theatrical returns, with upcoming titles like Practical Magic 2, Focker-In-Law, Shrek 5, and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia keeping the nostalgia train rolling.
The Legacy of Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry
Directed by Donald Petrie, the original 2003 film grossed nearly $180 million worldwide against a $50 million budget, becoming a cornerstone of the modern romantic comedy canon. The plot centered on Andie writing an undercover column on how to drive a man away in 10 days, while Ben made a high-stakes workplace bet that he could make any woman fall in love with him in the same timeframe. The film’s stellar ensemble also featured Kathryn Hahn, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele, and Shalom Harlow.
Where the Stars Stand Today
Both leads enter the potential sequel during thriving chapters in their careers:
- Kate Hudson: Earned her second Academy Award nomination for 2025’s Song Sung Blue (following her breakout turn in Almost Famous) and currently stars in the Netflix sports comedy series Running Point.
- Matthew McConaughey: Recently returned to the big screen in The Rivals of Amziah King after a six-year film hiatus. McConaughey has frequently praised the 2003 film as a career “anchor” and jokingly referred to its ongoing residual checks as the “gift that keeps on giving.”
