Over the past decade, Butler has pulled off one of the most remarkable transformations in modern cinema—transitioning from teen television heartthrob to an Oscar-nominated powerhouse working alongside the world’s most visionary directors. Whether he is morphing into a music legend, an unhinged sci-fi villain, or a gritty crime antihero, Butler brings an unmistakable Old Hollywood magnetism and intense commitment to every character he embodies.

To celebrate his 35th birthday milestone, here is a look back at six of Austin Butler’s most iconic and acclaimed roles so far.

1. Elvis Presley – Elvis (2022)

Baz Luhrmann’s flamboyant, electrifying biopic was the film that launched Butler into global superstardom. Butler spent nearly three years completely immersing himself in Elvis Presley’s voice, movements, and psychology. Delivering his own vocals for the early-career performances, Butler captured the raw sexuality and tragic isolation of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The performance earned him a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

2. Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen – Dune: Part Two (2024)

Proving he could play far more than just dashing leads, Butler delivered a chilling, physically menacing turn in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic. Shedding his hair, eyebrows, and charming persona, Butler portrayed the sadistic, blade-wielding nephew of Baron Harkonnen with terrifying, snake-like grace.

His ferocious gladiatorial battle against Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides stood out as one of the definitive cinematic highlights of 2024.

3. Hank Thompson – Caught Stealing (2025)

Teaming up with acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky, Butler took on the lead role of Hank Thompson in this gritty, 1990s-set New York crime thriller. Playing a burned-out former baseball player turned bartender who unwittingly gets dragged into a chaotic underworld war, Butler anchored the film with grounded charisma and physical grit.

Critics widely praised the film for showcasing Butler’s leading-man star power within a dark, high-adrenaline thriller.

4. Benny – The Bikeriders (2024)

Directed by Jeff Nichols, this 1960s Midwestern motorcycle drama paired Butler with Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer. Playing Benny, a fiercely independent, quiet enigma torn between his loyalty to a motorcycle club and his love for his wife, Butler channeled a modern James Dean-esque coolness that dominated every scene.

5. Major Gale “Buck” Cleven – Masters of the Air (2024)

Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Apple TV+’s high-budget World War II miniseries featured Butler as Major Gale “Buck” Cleven. Butler brought stoic heroism, quiet authority, and emotional gravity to the cockpit as a leader in the 100th Bomb Group navigating perilous bombing runs over Nazi-occupied Europe.

6. Tex Watson – Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (2019)

Quentin Tarantino gave Butler his first major cinematic breakthrough as Charles Manson follower Tex Watson. Though his screentime was limited, Butler’s tense horseback standoff with Brad Pitt at the Spahn Ranch signaled to directors across the industry that he possessed serious screen authority.
