With previews kicking off in December and an official opening night scheduled for the icon’s 81st birthday in January 2027, tickets are bound to fly faster than a coat of many colors.
The Great White Way is about to get a whole lot brighter—and significantly more sequined.Global icon Dolly Parton, alongside heavy-hitting producers Danny Nozell, Adam Speers (for ATG Productions), and Gavin Kalin Productions, revealed that her autobiographical biomusical has locked in its official Broadway home.
According to details shared by Deadline, the production has secured its official New York home at the historic St. James Theatre following a wildly successful, record-breaking world premiere run in Nashville last summer. For fans itching to witness the definitive evolution of the “Backwoods Barbie” into a global legend, the wait won’t be long: tickets go on pre-sale tomorrow, Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM ET.
The Timeline: From Winter Previews to a Milestone Birthday Bash
The staging strategy for Dolly: A True Original Musical is built around celebration. Public preview performances are set to commence on Monday, December 7, 2026. This gives the production a few weeks to settle into the rhythm of West 44th Street before its official, star-studded opening night on Tuesday, January 19, 2027—a date meticulously chosen to coincide with Parton’s 81st birthday.
“My whole life has been a musical,” Parton shared in a glowing statement. “A grand ole opera really, and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.”
The Score and the Story: “Rhinestones Were Never Her Whole Story”
Unlike traditional jukebox productions that can sometimes feel cobbled together, Dolly is built from the ground up to be an intimate, unfiltered narrative told in the superstar’s own words. The book has been co-written by Parton herself alongside two-time Emmy Award winner Maria S. Schlatter, who previously collaborated with the singer on the Emmy-winning Netflix holiday hit Christmas on the Square.
The musical traces her journey from her barefoot, humble beginnings in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee straight to the glittering apex of Hollywood fame. Audiences can expect an expansive score that weaves her most iconic historical masterpieces with brand-new, original songs penned specifically for the stage. Confirmed staples in the production include:
- “I Will Always Love You”
- “Jolene”
- “Coat of Many Colors”
- “9 to 5”
Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher (To Kill a Mockingbird, South Pacific), who is steering the theatrical ship, noted that the Broadway transition will dig significantly deeper than the public’s perception of her glamor.
“During our world premiere in Nashville, I was overwhelmed by the deep connection audiences have with Dolly,” Sher stated. “But despite all of that genuine love, Dolly has never really shared her story before. She’s offered glimpses and peeks, but this musical allows her to reveal the unfiltered story in her own words. As we prepare to come to Broadway, we’re thrilled to show that rhinestones were never her whole story.”
The Backstage Brain Trust: The Elite Creative Roster
To ensure the production scales beautifully to the standards of the St. James Theatre, the producers have assembled an absolute powerhouse of Broadway and commercial entertainment royalty.
Rounding out the musical pipeline are vocal and music arrangers Richard Dennison and Gregg Perry. As longtime creative extensions of Dolly’s inner circle, their inclusion ensures that the sonic landscape retains the exact authentic, soulful country-pop DNA that Parton pioneered across her six-decade career.
Deepening the Story for New York
While casting and secondary ensemble details are being kept strictly under wraps for the next few weeks, the team is actively using the data from the sold-out Nashville run at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts to fine-tune the pacing for Broadway audiences.
As producer Adam Speers of ATG Productions perfectly summarized:
“Everything we learned during our world premiere in Nashville, we’re shaping the show and deepening the storytelling so that the Broadway production fully captures the spirit of this amazing woman. To be opening the show on Dolly’s 81st birthday is not only a celebration of a milestone, but of a life shaped by generosity, courage, and purpose that, in this moment, feels not only uplifting and inspiring, but essential.”
Initial ticket sales windows will extend through Sunday, November 21, 2027.
