Chita Rivera was a Broadway legend. She gave voice and life to great characters that have left a mark on history, participating in projects like Chicago and West Side Story, and joining the esteemed EGOT club over time.

Just a few hours ago, her loved ones announced the sad news of her passing at the age of 91. She will always be remembered as an icon in the industry, an incomparable Anita in the Puerto Rican love musical and a kind soul.

During an interview with EFE in 2012, she spoke about the importance of these roles in her career and said, “I think I’ve been blessed because I’ve been able to play many roles, and when ‘West Side Story’ came along, it was the perfect musical“.

What happened to Chita Rivera?

Rivera, the actress who never hid her love for Puerto Rico, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, in the morning, after battling a brief illness at the age of 91. It is still unknown what illness the musical genius was suffering from.

Her publicist, Merle Frimark, also addressed the world and told Us Weekly: “It is with immense personal sorrow that I announce the death of the beloved Broadway icon Chita Rivera. My dear friend of over 40 years was 91“.

Her daughter, Lisa Mordente, reached out directly to The New York Times to convey what happened to her fans and followers, her former castmates, and anyone who shared a moment with the internationally recognized figure.

Undoubtedly, she had a successful and active career that spanned from theaters to music, as well as the small and big screen. Some of her recent projects include the Netflix series One Day At a Time and the musical The Visit.

Eleven years ago, she spoke with the media outlet Infobae and confessed, “I have worked hard. I am a positive person who forgets the negative. You have to trust in God, have a sense of humor, and laugh at yourself; you have to enjoy life”.
