Amaia Montero Returns to La Oreja de Van Gogh after 18 Years

After months of speculation and a 18-year absence, a new chapter has officially begun for the legendary Spanish band, La Oreja de Van Gogh.

The group announced today the highly-anticipated return of their original vocalist, Amaia Montero.

This reunion follows the departure of singer Leire Martínez in late 2024 and marks a monumental moment in Spanish-language pop music. Montero’s homecoming is a tribute to the band’s roots, rekindling the creative spark that defined their early success and captivated a generation of listeners.

During Amaia Montero’s first tenure with the band, from 1996 to 2007, La Oreja de Van Gogh created a collection of hits that transcended languages and cultural barriers. “Rosas” (2003)

Considered the band’s signature song, “Rosas” became a global sensation. The track from their album Lo que te conté mientras te hacías la dormida was a commercial success not only in Spain but also across Latin America. It was their second and most successful song to chart on the US Hot Latin Songs chart, peaking in the top ten. Its melancholic lyrics about a love that has faded resonated deeply with listeners.

“La Playa” (2000)

This nostalgic and bittersweet song became one of the band’s most popular hits. “La Playa,” from the album El viaje de Copperpot, was a major success in Spain and across Latin America, helping to establish the band’s international reputation. Its timeless melody and poignant lyrics about reminiscing on a past love make it a fan favorite and a staple of Spanish pop.

“Puedes Contar Conmigo” (2003)

The lead single from their third album, this song was an instant hit. “Puedes Contar Conmigo” (You Can Count on Me) reached number one in Spain and was their first song to chart in the top five on the US Hot Latin Songs chart. From their album Guapa, “Muñeca de Trapo” (Rag Doll) was another major hit that topped charts in Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. “Deseos de Cosas Imposibles” (2004)

This track, also from the album Lo que te conté mientras te hacías la dormida, became a worldwide success. The song’s enduring popularity is a testament to its raw honesty and universal themes of longing and regret.
