Masters of the Air is the upcoming Apple TV+ series set to premiere in January 2024, and it is already one of the most anticipated titles on the platform. This anticipation is not only due to its compelling storyline but also because of its stellar cast, which includes highly recognized names in the industry such as Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa.
The title joins the ranks of “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”, featuring epic aerial battles and large-scale action. The action sequences provide the necessary realism to properly portray the narrative of the conflict that paralyzed the world in 1939. Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman serve as producers.
The seven-episode program meticulously showcases realistic recreations of B-17 and P-51 bombings, utilizing cutting-edge CGI. Many eagerly awaiting fans have already begun to wonder if the war story is based on real events and what the origin of the plot is. Here, check out what you need to know.
What is Masters of the Air based on?
The story depicted in Masters of the Air is based on real events and the book titled “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany”, written by Donald L. Miller and published in 2006. It is the first series produced by Apple Studios in collaboration with Playtone and Amblin Television.

The seven episodes closely follow a group of young individuals who formed the largest air fleet ever sent by the United States during World War II. As is typical in wartime contexts, only a few of them manage to return home. These individuals were not only sent directly into Hitler’s territory on bombing missions but also experienced life-and-death moments at thousands of feet in the air.
The unit was named the “Bloody Hundredth” due to the significant losses it suffered in combat missions against Nazi Germany. Five miles above the ground, only eleven men, inside a bomber known as the “Flying Fortress”, had to contend with waves of German fighters behind enemy lines.
