The project has locked in its lead, with rising Disney star Kenzi Richardson (Vampirina: Teenage Vampire) set to star as Coral, the half-mermaid daughter of Aquamarine and Raymond.
Jake McDorman will reprise his role as beach club heartthrob Raymond as a series regular, while Emma Roberts is set to executive produce and guest star as her original character, Claire Brown.
A New Generation Takes the Plunge
The upcoming series picks up 20 years after the events of the original movie, centering on teenager Coral (Richardson) as she navigates adolescence, identity, and the mysteries of her lineage:
- The Logline: After moving to a seaside town, thoughtful and artistic teen Coral begins unraveling the truth behind her mother Aquamarine’s disappearance. In doing so, Coral awakens her own latent mermaid powers just as secrets beneath the ocean threaten to surface.
- Raymond’s New Chapter: Raymond (McDorman) now serves as a single father struggling to navigate Coral’s growing independence while still grieving the loss of his true love, Aquamarine.
- Claire’s Return: Claire Brown (Roberts) returns to her hometown in a guest-starring capacity to help support Raymond and keep the magical secret intact.
Behind-the-Camera Reunion
Disney has assembled a creative team deeply connected to both the original film and modern coming-of-age television:
The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson wrote the pilot and serves as executive producer.
Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the 2006 theatrical film, is back in the director’s chair for the pilot and serves as an executive producer.
Original Aquamarine producer Susan Cartsonis executive produces alongside Emma Roberts.
Joining Richardson and McDorman as new series regulars are young stars Briella Guiza, Theodore Dalton, and Annika Reese.
Production on the pilot is scheduled to begin later this fall, bringing the beloved Y2K fantasy into a brand-new era for Disney+.
