Michael Mando’s return as Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has brought one of the MCU’s forgotten villains back into the spotlight, but fans are looking beyond Scorpion’s mechanical tail and toward a much darker possibility: his transformation into Venom.



After first appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming as a criminal with unfinished business against Peter Parker, his story has remained one of Marvel’s most intriguing loose threads. The speculation grew stronger after he shared comic imagery connecting Scorpion and Venom, a reference to a storyline where Mac Gargan became the symbiote’s host in Marvel Comics.

“The potential growth of [Mac Gargan] is enormous. Brand New Day is level one of this character’s potential and he has at least two or three levels up from here, one of them being the ultimate form of Venom”, he said while discussing the future of his MCU character.



The comments immediately reignited speculation surrounding one of Marvel Comics’ most notable connections between Scorpion and Venom. In the comics, Mac Gargan, originally introduced as one of Spider-Man’s enemies, eventually becomes a host for the Venom symbiote, creating a more aggressive and ruthless version of the character. 



Gargan’s return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is significant because the character was first introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming as a criminal who developed a personal grudge against Peter Parker after their confrontation.

The Venom franchise is preparing to enter unexplored territory. After three live-action films led by Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Sony Pictures is developing an animated movie centered on Marvel’s iconic symbiote, opening the door to a new visual style and a different approach to one of the studio’s most successful Spider-Man-related characters.

Sony revealed that an animated Venom movie is officially in development, expanding the franchise beyond its live-action trilogy. The project will mark the first animated feature centered on Marvel’s symbiote antihero, with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the filmmakers behind Final Destination: Bloodlines, attached to direct.



The announcement represents a new direction for Sony Pictures’ Venom franchise after the conclusion of the live-action films starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. While details about the story, animation style and release date remain unknown, the studio is moving forward with a project designed to explore a different side of the character and his chaotic symbiote world.



The animated film will reportedly bring back key figures from the previous Venom movies, with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach expected to produce. Tom Hardy is also attached in some capacity, although it has not been confirmed whether he will return as the voice of Venom or participate behind the scenes as a producer.



Sony’s decision to move Venom into animation follows the success of its animated Marvel projects, especially the Spider-Verse franchise, which demonstrated the creative possibilities of superhero animation.

Instead of immediately continuing Eddie Brock’s story with a fourth live-action installment, Sony appears to be using animation as a way to keep the character active while opening a new chapter for the franchise.
