<a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/topic/dev-patel">Dev Patel</a>’s directorial debut “Monkey Man,” an action thriller in which he also stars and co-wrote, was one of the sensations coming out of the 2024 SXSW Festival. Now, the film is finally having its streaming release in the US this week.



The <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/movies">movie</a> will come out on Peacock on June 14. Its streaming releases come two months after its theatrical premiere (April 15), in which the film grossed $34.6 million against a production budget of only $10 million. Apart from being a success at the box office, the movie has also been positively received by critics, with The Hollywood Reporter comparing it to John Wick.

Director and producer Jordan Peele acquired the rights under his Monkeypaw Productions banner and convinced Universal to distribute it. Here’s what to know about this film.



<h2>What is ‘Monkey Man’ about?</h2>



Patel’s film, co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, follows Kid (Patel), who barely makes ends meet by participating in underground fight clubs where he takes beatings for cash. However, when he decides to infiltrate the elite social circles of his city’s wealthiest and most corrupt individuals, he starts a quest to avenge his mother’s death.

The film has received praise for depicting many touchy subjects, especially in India: corruption, caste system, discrimination and more. However, for some, these elements create “expectations for a complex story that never emerges” (The New Yorker), but The Washington Post believes that the film addresses these inequalities in “ways more pointed than you would expect.”

The story follows a fisherman living on the outskirts of a coastal town; she is single, smelly, and constantly mocked. One day, fed up with her stuck-up and narrow-minded neighbors, she orders a wicker husband for herself.



Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer are not only directing the film but also adapting the screenplay for the big screen, which is based on the novel written by Ursula Wills-Jones.



<h4>Rabbit Trap – TBA</h4>



“Rabbit Trap” will be quite a stark genre shift compared to the last <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/movies">movies</a> Patel has been starring in, as it belongs to <a href="https://spoiler.bolavip.com/en/topic/horror">horror</a> and is full of suspense, chaos and a lot of psychological drama.



Directed and scripted by Bryn Chainey, the film is still in pre-production, so it’s a bit early to know when it could hit the big screen, but many estimate it will be in 2025.

<h2>The director talked about making the film</h2>



Indie Wire had the opportunity to speak with the Texan director, David Lowery, who is not only an innovative storyteller but also holds The Green Knight in quite a special regard, especially for how he brought the idea to life.



During an interview with the outlet in 2021, the filmmaker confessed that he delayed the A24 release by a year and even considered quitting his career, as it was “a very existential year”.

Additionally, he also talked about how he made the film and said:



“I didn’t have the idea to turn it into a movie until about 11 months before we started shooting it. It was a very sudden obsession. I certainly always wanted to make a fantasy film. Whether it’s ‘Willow’ or ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ I’ve always loved that genre. 



At that particular time in my life, I wanted to make a film about someone on a quest. I thought about the poem, and I thought it would be a good template for a film. I didn’t even know if I would necessarily adapt ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ or if I would use elements of that text for a film that would have been something different and entirely original.
